Keeping your baby warm

When your baby has just been born, everything is still new and exciting. What is the best way to hold him? How often should I feed him? Oh, he’s crying, what should I do?? When your little one is born during these chilly days, but also at any other temperature, you will also wonder if he is too hot or too cold and how best to keep him at the right temperature. Being too cold is obviously not pleasant for your baby, but being too warm isn't good either. Um… could I have a manual with that, perhaps…? We are happy to give you a number of useful tips that you can put into practice immediately during the first week after birth.

Temperature in the room

During the first few days, it is important to keep the temperature in your baby's room around 20/21 degrees Celsius during the day and around 19 degrees Celsius at night. After that, you can gradually reduce it to 17 degrees Celsius. Are you planning a newborn photoshoot? Then heat the room nice and warm for the shoot if you are also photographing your baby without clothes. At temperatures that are too cold, he will also be more likely to pee!

Bedding and hot water bottles

That is always a tricky one: what kind and how much bedding does a baby need? You basically always put a newborn baby to bed wearing the clothes they wore during the day. In autumn and winter, you can use a sheet and two blankets. This is often still necessary in the summer too, as your baby gets cold easily during the first few days. You can also use hot water bottles if your baby has difficulty staying warm. You can feel this clearly on the baby's neck. Always make sure the bottles are properly sealed. Place the bottles under the blankets before bedtime, and once your baby is in bed, you can place them on the side of the blanket. Always use a hot water bottle cover or a muslin cloth around the bottle.

Keep your baby warm with a sleep wrap

Use the Snoozzz Sleep Wrap. This is not only handy for keeping your baby in place in bed, but it also prevents your little one from kicking the blankets off. Because the sleep wrap is made of cotton, you can also use it in the summer.

Clothing to keep your baby warm

Have your baby wear a diaper, onesie, pants, sweater, socks, and hat during the first week. When your baby is out of bed, put on a nice warm bath cape so he doesn't get cold. Your little baby basically lies still all day, so he gets cold faster. Always fold this over immediately when your baby comes out of the bath.

With the tips above and a lovely maternity nurse, you will get through that first week without worrying about your baby being too hot or too cold!
