Your baby isn't sleeping, and you are worried about it. That is, of course, perfectly logical. As a parent, you assume that your baby is sleeping soundly, both at night and during the day. You know that babies need a lot of sleep, especially for their development. It is therefore very frustrating when your baby isn't sleeping and you don't really know why. Snoozzz.com tells you more about your baby's sleep. More importantly, we answer the question “My baby isn't sleeping, what now?”
The baby is not sleeping: cause reflux
Your baby sleeps restlessly, both during the day and at night. Your baby often spits up or makes swallowing sounds. Sometimes your baby is restless in the evening, but you may also notice that your baby is restless after feeding. Do you see your baby drinking restlessly and then sleeping restlessly? This could be related to reflux, which is common in many babies. Your baby drinks the bottle restlessly and may sometimes start spitting up milk again quite quickly. This is a symptom of reflux. You can use a reflux pillow to reduce the symptoms and see immediately if your baby sleeps better. Are the symptoms severe? Then it is advisable to visit the GP.

The baby does not sleep during the day.
Your baby does not sleep during the day, your baby sleeps poorly during the day, or your baby takes short naps during the day. These are three different sleep problems that can all be related to a number of causes. A common cause of all three sleep problems in your baby is overtiredness. When your baby is too tired, they can no longer sleep. The lack of sleep during the day makes your baby even more tired, and so you essentially end up in a vicious cycle. Your baby will not fall asleep on their own if they are too tired. It is good to help your baby relax even more, for example by rocking them until they fall asleep. Other causes of these sleep problems are temporary. Examples include a cold or teething.
Your baby does not sleep through the night
Another common problem is that the baby cannot sleep through the night. Your baby sleeps poorly at night, or sleeps restlessly and makes a lot of groaning noises. This can indicate colic, especially if your baby makes sounds. Another common cause of poor nighttime sleep is not recognizing a day-night rhythm. Your baby does not know when it is day or night. Try keeping your baby awake a little longer during the day. Does this help your baby sleep better through the night? If so, you are teaching your baby when it is night. Finally, anxiety can also be a cause of poor nighttime sleep. Babies can be very attached to their parents, causing them to become restless and anxious when left alone.
Your baby isn't sleeping: the most common causes
Your baby is not sleeping or is showing an irregular sleep pattern. Many babies go through a period where they sleep poorly or restlessly. If your baby is not sleeping, chances are this is related to one of the 5 most common causes of sleep problems in babies. Naturally, we would be happy to discuss these causes with you.
1. Your baby doesn't know if it is day or night
For a baby, it is not as easy as for adults to know when it is day and when it is night. Some babies eventually reverse their rhythm on their own, causing them to sleep more often during the day and sleep poorly, restlessly, or hardly at all at night. Do you notice that your baby isn't sleeping at night, but is sleeping more during the day than before? Then you are likely dealing with a reversed rhythm, which is fortunately only temporary. The best way to remedy this is to keep your baby awake more during the day. Additionally, it is good to take your baby outside more often during the day. Natural daylight helps to restore the correct day-night rhythm.
2. Your baby isn't sleeping because your baby is hungry.
That’s impossible! The baby had a bottle or breast just two hours ago! Many parents find it unbelievable that a baby can be hungry again so soon. Breast milk is digested even faster than formula, so your baby often gets hungry again even sooner. It is quite possible that your baby isn't sleeping simply because they are hungry again. Hunger and thirst are among the most common causes of babies not sleeping. Is your baby not sleeping after feeding either? Then there is probably something else going on.
3. Your baby is not feeling well
Your baby will not sleep or will sleep poorly if they are experiencing discomfort. When your baby is not feeling well, you will often notice this first in their sleep. There could be several things going on. For example, your baby may be suffering from gas, constipation, allergies, or a cold. Additionally, your child may be teething, which naturally causes some discomfort. Pain and allergies are among the most common causes of babies not sleeping. Do you suspect this is the cause for your baby, but don't know exactly what is wrong? Then it is a good idea to visit your GP.
4. Your baby isn't sleeping because you aren't there
There are babies who are so 'in love' with their parents that they actually don't allow themselves any time to sleep. After all, when they go to sleep, you aren't there. These babies simply cannot sleep if you are not around. They constantly want to know where you are and what you are doing. Often, this sleep problem can be easily solved by temporarily placing the crib in the parents' bedroom, or by sleeping in the baby's room yourself for a few nights. Important: always let your baby sleep in their own crib and not in your bed. Doing so can actually worsen the problem if you want the baby to sleep in their own crib again.
5. Your baby is not sleeping because your baby is overstimulated
Babies are very sensitive, so excessive stimulation can disrupt their sleep. This overstimulation can be caused by various factors. It can be due to loud sounds/noise, many visitors wanting to hold and play with the baby, or, for example, the baby rolling over too much. It can even be caused by breast milk if you, as a mother, eat too much chocolate, to give just one example. Try to prevent your baby from being overstimulated so that their sleep improves. Does your baby roll over a lot, even in the crib? Then it is a good idea to sleep wrap to start using.
